Here’s the report:
KUALA LUMPUR (March 9, 2013): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today called on the government to extend the coverage of the Employment Act 1955 to the 200,000 foreign maids in the country. Its president, Mohd Khalid Atan, said foreign maids are not covered by the Act and are subject to abuse by their employers. In a statement in conjunction with the International Women’s Day, he said MTUC has submitted a memorandum to the Human Resources Ministry on the matter.International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8. Mohd Khalid added that the maids would be able to get legal protection and assistance if they were covered by the Act. – Bernama
I wonder what kind of protection MTUC was referring to? Medical leave? Sick leave, over time pay for work in access of 8 hours? As for abuse and legal assistance, don’t you think there are already adequate laws to protect them, which is the same as the laws existing to protect all Malaysians?
But this coverage, if extended to all domestic servants, may be able to encourage our locals to become maids as the foreign maids that I know are already getting free lodging, meals, medical and freedom to watch ASTRO channels during the day (someone I know even subscribe ASTRO Mustika for her maid) and also sometimes (for those who are loved by their employer), free air fare and 1 month leave to return to their native country during the month of Aidiladha. Well, shouldn’t that be an interesting story to tell?
